Day One !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We arrived at JFK airport on Monday 1.30pm local time and made our way from the aiorport to a hotel quite near to where the car was being unloaded in Newark and, spent the night recovering from the flight and treck across New York armed with a whole load of goodies for the drive. Next morning we had to go all around town to get various pappers signed and rubber stamped. Then we could go to collect the car which was still in it's container. After a little negociation we were able to get the car and drive it out of the compound and sort out all the navigation equipment, when that was done we were met by a photographer from the London Evening Standard who took us to down town New York to take pictures and, when that was done we were on our way out of the city but, not at a good time as it was by the 5.00pm and a great rush of traffic was going our way out of the city limits.
The engine began to suffer and we had to stop when we were on the Pallisades heading North. I found I had put the wrong coil on the ignition system and it was boiling hot and then eventually stoped working so I had to change the coil and I decided to change the distributor and HT leads at the same time, so by the time I was finished it was almost 7.00pm. We made our way north as much as possible until it was nearly dark and parked the car up for the night in a car park miles from anywhere. A styate patrol man turned up just as we were going to go to sleep (in the car) and told me we could not stay there so we had to move on. All in all we had a very exhausting day and were glad to find a car park out side a cafe, and there we spent what was left of the night. DAY ONE WAS FROM NEW YORK TO JUST OUTSIDE MONROE NY
Day Two2/3/4 This has been very easy for the Mini driving each day around 300 miles and what supprised me was the weather, with each dat the sun has got hotter and by the time we arrived at Buffalo NY it was 28 degrees an d felt very warm indeed. We stayed at a camp site on an island called Grand Island right in the middle of Niagra and had a very plesant stay there for one night. This was the first night that we could actually relax and unwind. After a shower we went out shopping and than ate, after that I tried to connect the satellit telephone to my lap top and had a lot of trouble getting the two talking top each other it worked as a fax but I could not get onto the internet no matter how much I tried I even phoned Compuserve on there free number to get help but we had no luck. Apparently IO had the wrong lead to get a connection so I had to wait until I could go out and buy one. I went to my sleeping bag very late that night. Next day we drove to the falls at Niagra on the US side and even managed to get a police escort right up to the barriers of the falls to take some very spectacular pictures. See attached !
From there we drove to the Canadian side of the falls and drove right along the river and took more pictures if the water. From there on we decided to change our route as we lost a lot of time in NY and we decided to head back into the USA and drive alonge the bottom of lake Erie to Chicago sdriving through New York and Pennsylvania, Ohio, indiana Illinois and Iowa where we are at the moment staying at a camp site just south of Sioux City. We are now going to head South for Denver Colorado driving through Nebraska.
